About courses

From the projectionist course

The only course of its kind.

Comprehensive training for projectionists of both classic and digital film — anywhere, at any pace, online.

This is a worked e-learning curriculum that takes you step by step through everything a projectionist needs to know: from the physiology of vision and optics, through film stock and the construction of a projector, to digital projection under the DCI standard. It exists because this knowledge has been passed on by word of mouth, one booth at a time, and that no longer scales.

There are three versions of the course: Projectionist (classic + digital film), Classic Film Projectionist and Digital Film Projectionist. Choose according to which part of the trade interests you. The full list is in Courses and examinations.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the courses for?

Anyone with an interest in film projection. They are aimed at people who want to work as projectionists — of classic film (16, 35 and 70mm), digital film, or both. But they are not only for future projectionists: cinema staff, festival technical production, distribution, post-production and students of audiovisual disciplines all draw on the same material. Details of each course are in Courses and examinations.

What are the entry requirements?

None. The courses are built to be accessible to complete beginners while still adding something for people already in the trade.

What do I need?

A computer or tablet with an internet connection, and the willingness to work through the material properly. The course is e-learning, so you set the start date and the tempo yourself.

Is there any practical training?

Not as part of the course. Practice with a real machine matters enormously, and it cannot be arranged remotely — so instead of a booking service, you get guidance: what to arrange, what to ask for, what to try, and how to keep a record of it. If you complete practical hours in a cinema and can document them, we will record them on your certificate.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. A certificate of completion is issued for every course you finish, listing the course, its scope and the hours involved. It is a record of training, not a licence to practise — no such licence exists in most countries.

How long do I have access?

Once purchased, you have access to the course for one year. You set your own pace — the course has a structured syllabus with lessons opening progressively, so there is time to work through the material calmly and in depth.

Can I take an examination?

This curriculum has a formal counterpart in the Czech Republic, where it prepares candidates for a state-recognised professional qualification examination, leading to a certificate with a Europass supplement. That examination is held in person and in Czech, so it is realistic only for candidates who can travel and speak the language. Everyone else should treat these courses as what they are: the knowledge itself, certified by us.
